The Immaculate Conception School, a Catholic elementary school, suffered for years during the construction of the new DC convention center across the street. In a gesture of true philanthropy, the general contractor of the convention center, Clark Construction Group, hired Nelson Architects to team with them in a design-build arrangement to renovate the school. The scope of renovation for this nearly 100 year old structure included converting the two auditorium balconies into classroom space, converting a gymnasium into classroom space, inserting an elevator to serve all levels, new HVAC and restoring the historic landmarked façade. The scope also included the selection of all new school furniture.
